Bayview Hunters Point Future Search Conference

A well-documented planning tool, that will be used to engage a large number of stakeholders to create a shared vision and action plan for the community. The impact of a community developed, clearly articulated shared vision for the economic development and ongoing vitality of the Bayview will be helpful in identifying larger community priorities and allowing all facets of the community to work together toward the shared vision.

The Bayview Merchants’ Association was founded in 1925, when the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood was known to locals as “Butchertown” because of the high density of slaughterhouses in the area. The population was small, but a group of committed business people came together in an effort to promote the merchants to the outside community and to provide a voice for their businesses to the local government.

Our BBAA sponsored strolls have been greatly appreciated by the Bernal Heights post-pandemic community this past year, thanks to the support of the Avenue Greenlight grants, which helped fund multiple live music groups, art exhibits and a Santa Claus for holiday!

The addition of the two strolls in the spring has helped inject life and business into what is typically a slower season. For Valentine's Day the BBAA added strolling musicians to help boost local dining and our Earth Day Stroll was coordinated along with the Bernal Heights Library and Events on the Hill Facebook group to increase participation and attendance.

Comedy Day #42

The San Francisco comedy community is very strong. Comedy Day is regarded as the "company picnic" for all who perform and work behind the scenes in our thriving community. Comedy Day has been an annual celebration of stand up comedy in San Francisco for 41 years. It is a totally volunteer driven 501(c)(3) organization that puts on a five hour comedy show absolutely FREE of charge every September in Robin Williams Meadow of Golden Gate Park.

Comedy Day is the Original, Longest-Running, FREE, Outdoor Comedy Concert in the World. One Stage. Five Hours. 40 Comedians. A Million Laughs! Absolutely FREE!

Comedy Day is very important to the creative fabric of San Francisco. Not only does it bring laughter FREE to the public, it brings the comedy community together on a day of celebration of our art and community. We surely couldn't have done it without the support of Avenue Greenlight, which helped to pay for the necessary permits and services for the event.

Dear Community Resilient Rabbit Gala

One of the solutions to stopping Asian hate is to build a community of supporters. This is the work that Dear Community does. We have recurring events that bring people together to support Asian small businesses: H(API) Hour and Chinatown Fridays. We also partner on other city-wide Asian community building events
and maintain a large group of people with fun, engaging ways to get involved in activism. Avenue Greenlight will support these bi-monthy events.

Dear Community is a San Francisco based grassroots nonprofit organization that began in early 2021 during the stop Asian hate movement. We began as weekly dinners in Chinatown as an effort to bring business and people back to keep businesses alive and residents safe. We've since evolved, partnering with other
organizations and producing events city wide that focus on uplifting Asian pride through community building and activism.

The Dogpatch Music Series will bring the community together around music, food, art and public space. These family-friendly events will feature entertainment for all ages, and will celebrate our diverse community through jazz, latin and blues music.

The GBD was created by Dogpatch and Potrero Hill neighbors to better focus the power and resources of City government through a local lens - the awareness and insights of neighborhood residents and business owners. There are currently 14 benefit districts across San Francisco, mostly in commercial districts like Union Square and Fisherman’s Wharf. The Dogpatch & NW Potrero Hill Green Benefit District is the first to focus primarily on parks, greening and public realm improvements in a residential neighborhood.

Excelsior Music & Arts Festival

The Excelsior Music & Arts Festival is an event meant to activate the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater and bring attention and foot traffic to the Excelsior/Crocker Amazon neighborhood and business corridor. Our plan is to have a daytime event at the Amphitheater, featuring local bands, artists, and vendors, that brings the community together to discover some of what the neighborhood has to offer.

EOMM is focused on creating a safe environment in the Geneva & Mission area to foster commercial success for local businesses in the Crocker-Amazon, Excelsior and Outer Mission Neighborhoods.

In 2023 we produced Ever Higher Excelsior Music & Arts Festival in McLaren Park, which brought together local musicians and artists for a free celebration of local talent. Jerry Garcia Amphitheater has in the past been underutilized, and we are proud to be part of the efforts in bringing it back to life, and displaying what this often-overlooked part of the city has to offer. Locals have reason to take pride in the city's second-largest park, as well as the commercial corridors adjacent to it.

The Fire Pit Project glass blowing demos are considered arts activation for community. They are free and open to all. Using the already demonstrated successes, we will partner with our long time friends at Public Glass to hire a dynamic glass blowing artist with preferences given to our BIPOC artists. The most important
part of this arts activation is to expose young people in our community to another medium of art that is sadly underrepresented in the African American and Latino communities.

Economic Development on Third is a non-profit organization committed to the success of the Third Street Corridor, which is home to the largest concentration of African American owned businesses in San Francisco.

We certainly did receive a generous grant of 15k from Avenue Green Light last year. This enabled us to purchase a modern glass blowing furnace that is portable. This enabled us to have an outdoor community event that a brought many of our community together for a gathering for music, food and to watch artists blow glass. The Great Hauntway 2023, will be a continuation of a successful Halloween event that offers children a coastal, community-powered trick or treating experience unique to San Francisco. On the most dangerous day of the year to youth pedestrians, the Great Hauntway provides families a safe, car- free space to celebrate the holiday.

Friends of Great Highway Park is an all-volunteer nonprofit accustomed to making the most out of small budgets, with extensive experience organizing community events both large and small.

Last year's Great Hauntway, funded through an Avenue Greenlight, brought more than 10,000 people to the coast for an early Halloween celebration. Halloween is the most dangerous day of the year for youth pedestrians; transforming the Great Highway into the "Great Hauntway" gave kids a safe and only-in-San-Francisco way to celebrate the holiday. It is a uniquely community-driven event, as neighbors and local groups set up nearly 150 decorated tables for kids to trick or treat. The vision is that Lakeside Village is a thriving, safe, fun, inclusive, and beautiful commercial district for businesses, residents, and shoppers. We have a steering team of 9 active members. The group is complemented with many community partners and volunteers.

Lower Polk Neighbors

California & Hyde Street Lighting Project

The Lower Polk Neighbors will add much needed lighting on this often ignored but incredible small business corridor. The proposed area for these lights has suffered immensely from the COVID19 pandemic and its aftermath. What used to be a bustling corridor is so dark at night that it has become a magnet for trash, homelessness activity, and street crime. There is a desperate need for lighting in this area, and this project will have an oversized impact
on the community!

Lower Polk Neighbors (LPN) is a neighborhood association, made up of both residents and merchants, located in the lower part of the Polk Gulch district in San Francisco, California. We meet to discuss neighborhood issues and then follow up on those discussions with action. Our principal issues are crime, cleanliness, beautification, and strengthening of our community.

Mid Market Art Walk

The Mid Market Art Walk will be held along Market Street from 5th to 8th Streets, in September or October of 2023. The community event will feature a range of art exhibits including photography, painting, sculpture and mixed media hosted in storefronts.

The Mid Market Community Benefit District (MMCBD), also known as the Central Market Community Benefit District, provides core neighborhood services with its Community Ambassadors and Clean Teams; it also promotes local businesses, encourages economic development and public improvements, as well coordinates numerous major events and advocates on behalf of its constituents with respect to a host of public policy, planning, and quality-of-life issues.

As this was the first time the art walk was held along three blocks of Market Street, we and the participating artists were pleased by the variety of dynamic locations, business participation, attendance, and art sale levels throughout the event. The weekend drew hundreds of visitors and area residents to the neighborhood, activating the blocks and their businesses, boosting morale post-pandemic, and reminding all of Mid Market’s arts-focused roots. It provided numerous economic opportunities for participating businesses and regional artists and directed interest in potential new storefront leases, providing area liveliness as compared to the typical quieter weekends.

These holiday-themed toy drives and costumed festivities drew hundreds of participants to activate the corridor, supporting local small business and engaging the community.

Block parties, especially Halloween and Christmas, fostered community spirit with games, music, and activities for all ages.

Potrero Hill History Night 2023

The Potrero Hill Archives Project has held Potrero Hill History Nights every Fall for 23 years in theaters, schools and most recently in a neighborhood church.

The Potrero Hill Archives Project began in 1986 collecting oral histories of long-time residents, historic photos and really anything connected to Potrero Hill history. They hold a History Night each fall, lead walking tours, and have written two Arcadia books on Hill history. Most recently, they’ve been working on another Arcadia book about the Dogpatch.

Our previous Avenue Greenlight grants made publicizing and recording two previous Potrero Hill History Nights possible. The events brought neighborhood history to audiences of about 200 people, bringing newcomers, longtime residents and visitors together. The events live on Youtube.

Refuse Refuse

Refuse Refuse Community Clean-Ups

Refuse Refuse is creating a movement to motivate fellow San Franciscans of all ages to take actions needed to clean their streets. Supplemental Avenue Greenlight funding will support continued growth of cleanups in every neighborhood in San Francisco, measurably reducing trash on city sidewalks and streets. Funding will support marketing and community organizing, including tabling at community events (we'd be happy to partner with Avenue Greenlight representatives going forward), and will build community through subsidizing post-cleanup gatherings at "It All Starts Here" participating merchants.

Refuse Refuse leveraged Avenue Greenlight's March 2023 $25,000 grant to conduct an average of 100 cleanups per month over 9 months, a 75% increase from the same period in 2022. In that period we attracted about 5000 new volunteers and 25 more cleanup captains to allow us to more easily expand to cover all neighborhoods in the city; volunteers spent about 17,500 hours removing 18,500 trash bags (or 240,000 gallons of trash) from our streets and sidewalks. Regularly collected data shows a measurable impact: monthly cleanups consistently reduced trash levels by over 30% and weekly cleaning reduced trash levels by over 75%.

Upper Noe Neighbors (UNN) brings our community together. We host speakers on a variety of topics of local interest to learn about issues affecting our area. We provide a voice for our neighbors in local government and communicate news and events. We engage in city issues and hold social events. This group builds upon the
history of the previous Upper Noe Valley Association that dates to the mid 1950s, at least.
